Ampakine drug enhance short-term memory not only in people with brain-altering diseases such as the three previously mentioned but they also improve the short-term memory of healthy subjects. These drugs act on the glutamate AMPA receptors within the brain to ultimately cause an increase in efficiency of a series of brain reactions and result in an increase in attention span and alertness while facilitating the tasks of learning and memory related tasks. Most drugs that have been designed for this purpose have many side effects due to the exhausting amount of work they’re putting on the brain. These side effects are long lasting and the most common between the drugs is sleepiness. The Ampakine drugs haven’t been found to have any of these side affects, making them appropriate for many groups such as the military.

Many scientists have conducted experiments on this class of drugs to determine exactly how effective they are in improving short term memory, one particular documented experiment which shown obvious results was the **'Hampson. R, Rogers. G, Lynch. G, Deadwyler. S**, Facilitative Effects of the Ampakine CX516 on Short-Term Memory in Rats: Enhancement of Delayed-Nonmatch-to-Sample Performance'.This experiment was conducted on rats and demonstrated how Ampakine drugs improve spatial short term memory by having the rats perform the delayed-nonmatch-to-sample test,the results showed the Ampakine class cx516 caused improvement in the spatial short term memory of rats.
